I watched Maryan yesterday. I am little disappointed, film is not bad, not bad at all, but it could have been so much more, a lot tighter and impactful. There are a couple of great moments, for sure. Dhanush’s performance is absolutely stunning. Every word Danush utters in the movie with perfect accent, expression and dynamics is music to ears. Parvathy too is very good. Main issue with second half is that African Terrorists are not at all scary; it feels like Danush can escape whenever he wants to, only issue is the strange barren land he is stuck in. So, A.R.Rahman’s percussive score in African episode for the Terrorists sounds too loud and pedestrian - even in Daily TV Serials, they use same bang loops for every reaction shot. Rahman should have gone in for a lot of Silence instead of wall to wall music in the second half. On the other side, Rahman’s score – which is omnipresent in the movie - adds an emotional heft to the romantic moments. Enga Pona Raasa is the theme song of the film; it appears in a lot of colorful variations throughout the film for the various phases of the love story, but the version on CD with abundant silence in never used in the film. I wonder why.

Beautiful bgms...
Saw the movie yesterday..Didn't expect bgms to be out so soon..How did you manage? Recorded while watching the movie? Whatever it is, thanks for sharing :)
am totally in love with anbin sangamam and cue number 19 :)
how can i download these?
Too loud? i dont think so, i watched in auro 11.1 sound. It was perfect and matched the situation of the movie. Rehman has matched the visuals of Mark and emotions, struggle of all the characters created by Bharat bala. He has made some pause here and thr which was awesome. Silence could have been done, but overall good BGS by ARR. Great experience. Thanks to Bharat bala for creating this wonderful movie.
I want to read your Music reviews for Mariyan n Raanjhana!!
Suresh Pls do it! :)
thanks for sharing suresh..
and if u dont know already, the engaponarasa movie version is by parvathy herself as mentioned by BB..
wall to wall sound?? the over the top sentimenal score for nondalala was appreciated here for the same reasons i guess..i watched the film,i felt the score tried it best to infuse some momentum in the sagging 2dn half..hilarious! but what do i know,to contradict your expert analysis;with you being bg score expert in indian blogosphere.
In my opinion, the pitch of the score must gel with the pitch of the emotions in the Visuals. In Nandalala, it did. The performances were also on that pitch. But, in Maryan, those African villains are just plain hilarious and when such loud percussions join them to scare us and inform us the immensity of the danger Maryan is in, it doesn't feel right. All the required momentum, in my opinion, is in Danush's performance. Rahman couldn't correct the sluggishness in the screenplay with his score, in this case. I don't think it is right on a filmmaker's part to hide his mistakes with a loud background score.
I am no background score expert, I am just more interested in learning more about it than anyone else. I generally, think loud on background score in this space.
the 11th track seems to be heavily inspired from a old tamil movie bgm. did anyone feel that way?
Anonymous - Wasn't the theme released before the movie, in one of the teasers? And Bharath Bala even mentioned that he wanted a retro-sound for the scene. It is just the bongo/congo sound that makes it sound like that.
