National Award for Ilaiyaraaja

The first ever National Award given for “Best Background Score” in a separate category goes to Ilaiyaraaja for his score in "Pazhassi Raaja".

but suresh,you never did your "sigmund freud like" analysis for pazhassi raja....why?i think he should have got it for naan kadavul which in your opinion will be good to hear as stand alone score like how john williams made with schindler's list

Anonymous - First of all, I saw the film "Pazhassi Raja" only once in DVD and that too in two parts. First time, when I saw, I really dozed-off in the middle of the film. I watched the rest of the film a few days later. However, I did register my thoughts on the score, here and there in this blog and in my twitter page @ursmusically. I have been listening to the ripped score more often, though.

@Suresh: Just to clarify. Is this indeed the first instance of Best BGM? I have been reading about Johnson being given a Best Background Score National Award for Sukrutham in 94. Could you plz check on that?

Vipin - Yes. Johnson did win one in 94 for Sukrutham. But that was a special case. That is why I mentioned "first ever after 'Best BGM' is introduced" as a separate category.
