Nice work. Sounds like a dvd commentary. The iruvar scene is just top notch ! Can you get that scene where there is that Pudhiya mugam chase music ?

Excellent compilation Suresh. More than appreciating Rahman's work here, I wish to thank you for making me listen to music with concentration and enjoy the results.

Thanks.

suresh, why not upload the wmvs to youtube to make it easier on your readers?

downloading this 80+mb file takes forever ;(

great work, btw.

Prabhu - Thanks.

'Listen to music with concentration' - That was exactly my intention.

Surveysan - Uploading in progress. Yesterday, I tried but few things went wrong while uploading it to youtube and that is why I posted the download links.. It should be up in Youtube soon....

thanks very much.

personally, i didnt like the slumdog score.
felt, some parts lacked the 'punch'.

when you get a chance, write about which scene was enhanced by Rahmans bmg :)

Surveysan - Yes, I am planning to write sometime soon about how Rahman's score helped the movie.

Hi,

Gr8 blog... nice posts... would it be possible for you to upload a bgm from a tamil movie called "Idaya Tamarai".. it is an amazing Bgm where Usha Uttup (I guess).. sings in the backgroup... when the hero and the heroin is joggin... please check if you can upload that... i have been searching that for real long.

Probably like most people I don't pay enough attention to background scores (except Ennio Morricone's from all of Sergio Leone's films:)...maybe that will be another Rahman accomplishment.

Certainly your blog might help me along too, this is very interesting. Thanks!

Thanks, great stuff. Have to disagree with one choice in particular... The Kannathil scene begins so well then it starts to call too much attention to itself when it rains and the intense moment is ruined with the excessive, heavy scoring. The music is distracting but that's just how I feel when I see this scene :) There were some fine moments in 1947/Earth too. Personally I was quite surprised that I liked - and now, love - the Slumdog score. I haven't always enjoyed some of Rahman's "contemporary" stuff but I can't get this out of my head.

Abhishek - Thanks. Will check out for that Idhaya Thaamarai BGM... I haven't seen that movie...

memsaab - Thanks. True, Ennio Morricone's automatically gets anyone's attention whether one cares for the background music or not....

Raj - Thanks. Abt Kannathil Muthamittal, yes it was loud but even the emotions in that scene were loud and louder for a maniratnam film.. so i thought likeably the music gelled well with it....Yes, 1947 Earth begins with a grand orchestral piece for the riots sequence which was also included in the soundtrack CD.... but otherwise it didn't have much of scoring moments in it... may be i have to catch it again...

Thanks for putting it up on youtube, it's much easier on the bandwidth. The first part took quite a while to download, but it was worth it I guess : I loaded the clip onto my iPod to watch during a long journey. Good work, pity I didn't have time to download the remaining parts at the time. But nevermind, Dehli 6 kept me company :)

What do you think of Dehli 6? All the songs sound a bit unique, though I don't think they are as commercial as Rang De Basanti was; RDB songs were very attention grabbing from the first note. Some of the Dehli 6 songs need more concentration to appreciate, I guess (I keep remembering what you said about listener concentration in your Yuvvraj review; very true). Songs that are running through my mind now are Masakalli (since I saw the promo) and Rehna Tu.

Actually, 1947 Earth's background score (and songs) I find very compelling and one of his best...it complemented the film perfectly which is possibly why it's not as remembered---the events/visuals onscreen were so compelling and his music very subtly enhanced them but did not overwhelm them.

I think the same is true for Deepa Mehta's Fire as well.

Suresh,

Its just so amazing how you manage to maintain a blog for background score and re-kindle people's interest in this most forgotten area in music.

As always, top stuff here.

Kannan - Heard Delhi-6 songs. Very interesting soundtrack, but yes not as catchy as RDB, but definitely Rahman has cleverly done a lot of tricks to make them sound catchy and more accessible... Will write a detailed review once I buy the CD...

P.S. Suresh Kumar said...

Memsaab - Yes. May be I should watch 1947 Earth again. I haven't seen Fire yet, though have heard the soundtrack.

Vinayak - Thanks da. Frankly, I am doing just 10% of what I actually wanted to do in this blog. There is so much happening and there is so much to talk about scores.... It is tough to catch up....

Hi,
'Idhaya Thamarai' has one amazing BGM score done by Shankar Ganesh. Don't know if it has been lifted from elsewhere, since SG are known to do that.
Anyway if you can upload that BGM it would be great. Have been searching for it for a very long time.

Anon - Have been hearing a lot of good things about 'Idhaya Thamarai', but belive me I haven't seen this movie yet. I should search for the movie CD...

Suresh, a little late to post in this section but better late than never. Simply wonderful compilation there. For some reason, I had never paid so much attention to Rahman's bg scores as I did with his songs. Your compilation was an eye opener. Now I could appreciate Rahman better.

Personally, of all the musical blogs out there for tamil music, your's is the one that interests me the most. Please keep up the good work.

Fan - 'Your compilation was an Eye opener' - Glad to read that as that was my prime intention is doing all this, to open everyone's ears to bgms.

And Thanks.
