Many composers, at some point or other, did lift something or other. The point is to explore an artist's work, particularly the original work.Aakarshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15943886586244410709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995232424873037966.post-41153347737603265652010-08-17T13:18:59.366-07:002010-08-17T13:18:59.366-07:00Dilip - Even I hear and read about R.D.Burman'...Dilip - Even I hear and read about R.D.Burman's lifts. However, background score of Sholay (assuming that the themes are original) is genuinely inspired by the western films that Visu mentioned in the comment above.

Here is a Video of a scene from which both the takings and background score are inspired from

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVtEEM4Blz4

In the above video, you can hear the theme loudly and majestically when the murderers show up, but, in Sholay, even after the entry of Gabbar, the silence is maintained and only midly Gabbar's theme is played when he picks his gun and aims to shoot the boy. I don't know in what context, the music was played loud in the original, but I am glad that they didn't literally copy the technique and use such loud score in Sholay. Though they got inspired, there definitely was some thought that has gone into the ways of adapting that technique to the cuts and shifts in the visuals of Sholay and so the impact of the technique in Sholay is even better than that in the original.P.S. For instance Mehabooba mehabooba song from Sholey was a direct life from Denis rouses's Say you love me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UJXgmPqAE4

Due to this bad remark i was not attracted towards RDB's music and so his BGM. However your write-up creates some interest to take a chance on Sholey again :)Diliphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09895757290036671835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995232424873037966.post-12580047483810565212010-08-16T06:03:15.375-07:002010-08-16T06:03:15.375-07:00Aakarsh - Yes, I did see those videos in Youtube w...Aakarsh - Yes, I did see those videos in Youtube with RDB's original Musicians, especially the ones with Manohari Singh (Sax playe). Thanks for the information about Euphony CD. I will definitely buy it.

Taufiq Qureshi (an arranger then and now a composer), beautifully explains some of the BGMs of R.D.Burman in the "Pancham Unmixed" documentary. In that, he does explain in detail about Basanti's Kidnap scene.P.S. The action scene after Holi sequence has some amazing music. And ofcourse, the famous Basanti's kidnap scene. The fast movement of Tonga was supplemented by Tabla, a very fast style of playing tabla called "Rela", in Hindustani classical. Famous player Pt.Samtha Prasad was summoned for this scene.Aakarshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15943886586244410709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2995232424873037966.post-66025232138081679312010-08-14T04:56:50.089-07:002010-08-14T04:56:50.089-07:00Visu - //But we should give credit where credit is...Visu - //But we should give credit where credit is due.//

That is why I wrote "That explains why the some of the sentences that should have ended with an exclamatory mark ends with a question mark in this article."

And Yes, I have not seen "Once Upon a Time in the West".

I did read quite a lot of about Sholay being a direct lift of such
films. Using Harmonica to play the theme is for sure an inspired idea but I don't know if playing it in Saarangi and playing it as an incomplete melody on Strings also came from Ennio Morricone.

About the Silent moments - I am happy that at least there were wise enough to copy exactly from the original and not put music in those emotional scenes in name of Indianising it. :-)P.S. Henry Fonda plays Gabbar's role (his only negative role). The background score of the sound of swing, etc, is also copied from that movie. It is actually a trademark of Sergio Leone of using silence in the most intense and dramatic scenes.

The characters of Jai & Veeru are also from that movie - Charles Bronson plays the silent man, while Jason Robards plays the talkative man.

The inspiration for using harmonica for Jai and Radha also comes from this movie - harmonica is used to play the theme for Charles Bronson, whose name in the movie is in fact Harmonica, as he is always playing his harmonica. The main theme for Charles Bronson called "Man With A Harmonica" is one of the most haunting themes I have ever heard.

The gunfight on the freight train during Thakur's flashback with Jai and Veeru fighting the bandits is also taken from this movie.

This is not to say that I do not like Sholay. It is in fact one of my all-time favorite hindi movie and have watched countless number of times. Ramesh Sippy, RD Burman, and the actors have done a great job and have made the movie their own. But we should give credit where credit is due.

If you have not seen that movie then I would strongly recommend that movie. I am sure you would enjoy and appreciate what Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone have accomplished with that movie and in the process making it one of the greatest movies ever made.dafatanlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01608533031681017493noreply@blogger.com
